Hearing God Speak

Do you find yourself at times wanting so much to hear from God for some direction you need in your life? Are you wanting to hear some audible voice or see some visible image before you know it is indeed Him speaking to you? Well…. I hate to let the wind out of your sails, but God doesn’t necissarily speak to everyone in an audible voice. He may speak to some through visions, dreams, through other people, an audible voice, and most importantly He speaks to us in the one way that EVERY christian can hear. He speaks to us through scripture and prayer.

Hebrews 4:12 (New International Version)
12. For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

John 1
The Word Became Flesh
1. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2 Timothy 3:16
16. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,

If you need any more scriptures references than that to figure if God speaks through the bible, then you need some serious time alone with Him. But still… we seem to overlook the fact that indeed any time we wanted to hear from God He will speak to us through His word. And yet it still isn’t enough some times. We are kind of like Thomas, needing a second opinion, or to see for ourselves that He spoke to us personally. For some of us, God has to speak to us in other ways because we don’t read His word to find out those answers we seek. But unfortunately, just as we neglect to read scripture, we also can get ourselves so busy in life with stuff around us that we are never at peace enough to take time out to actually hear from God. Sometimes He could be right there beside us waiting for our response but we found ourself to be caught up in some issue that is keeping us too busy to listen. We could even be too busy in doing His works, or so we think we are doing his works. But we are not saved by works and nor will our works build up some kind of reward for us someday.

I personally have heard God in an audible voice about 4 or 5 times in my entire life (since I have known him) and 3 of those have came in the last few weeks. Yet I have talked to even Pastors who say they have never heard God in an audible voice but in other ways. And quite possibly many christians may think they heard God speak to them in an audible voice because the answer He gave them was what they really wanted to hear anyway. So it can be a little difficult to discern if you have actually heard the voice of God or what you wanted God to tell you. Here again, is yet another great reason to look to the Word.

If it’s not scripture that you are hearing from God with, then it could be a very common method He will use, such as hearing from Him through another person. A very common occurence in many christians lives, is to hear Gods answers to them through the words and actions of others. They could be friends, could be enemies or even people they don’t even know.

1 Samuel 3:9 (New International Version)
9. So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.’ ” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

One thing we must remember is that God is not going to yell across the room to get our attention when we are wanting to hear from Him. As you get to know Him in a deeper way, you will learn His voice just as you learn the voice of others that you talk to. But unlike others, God will never contradict himself as to what is written in scripture. So if you think that God told you to go out an do something stupid like kill or steal, then you know it wasn’t Him speaking to you. And you must remember that Satan will call you out from across the room. He doesn’t care, it’s his mission to steer you down the path of unrighteousness anyway. So staying in closr communion with God makes it easier to discern when He speaks to you, especially when you are tempted to make a stupid choice. Once you know the voice of God, it will be easy to know when Satan is trying to get you off track.

One thing about hearing from God is the fact that sometimes, we really don’t want to hear those truths because they go against our comfortable lives we have grown into. Especially when it means we may have to give up things. Yet on one hand we boast that we don’t have any idols while at teh same time are not willing to give up something in out life that is keeping us from getting where God wants us to be.. just ask yourself…. If God said to sell your house and go to another country on a 5 year mission trip, wouldn’t the first thing you do is name all teh reasons why you can’t do that, instead of a simple “yes Lord”. You can kind of relate it to human interactions as well, such as if you see someone out in public and the natural thing they say is “how’s it going”, and you startle them and say “everything is crap right now in my life”. The other person probably wishes they had never asked you, because now they may have to get involved, and it may cause pain or discomfort in their cozy little life. Just as God may speak to you, and you finally hear Him, don’t be surprised if what He tells you is gonna hurt in some way.

It reminds me of the old song that is based on scripture about God being the potter and I am the clay. If you pictureself as a lump of clay, you know there is bound to be some pain as your are shaped into a beautiful vessel designed by God. So be forwarned… listening to God will cause you to not only get closer to Him, but you will find that it removes a lot of the world from you. But thats what it is all about, we are not here to get every ounce of pleasure we can from life on earth. Of course in the beginning Adam & Eve were to enjoy a beautiful garden and yet also the idea was they would also be having walks with God and talking with Him. After they messed that up, our lives were not meant for total 24/7 pleasure. But lets not get off track here and go into that mess we created.

God did speak to Adam and Eve to specifically tell them what tree not to eat from, and yet they didn’t like that idea as compared to what Satan told them if they did in fact eat from the tree of life. And sure enough they both knew and even admitted to each other that God said not to, but the temtation to what lies ahead sounded more pleasurable and enjoyable. And just like then, the same holds true today, we will pass on fellowship with God for a chance at having what we are told or taught to think we should have instead. And it all came about because not only did Adam and Eve hear and speak with God, they didn’t want to hear from Him. And in fact, once they had messed up, they didn’t even want Him to see them, because they had to face Him and know that He would know.

Nothing is any different today. God tells us to do something, we choose different, and then we hide from Him because we know we didn’t listen to what He advised. Since we have gotten into this habbit of hiding and broken a unique situation, God still ends up seeking us out in other ways to talk and give us direction. It could be in the lyrics of a song that you hear at the right moments in life, or from the words spoken by a preacher during a sermon. God could use random events that happen in your life to wake us up sometimes, or allow us to fall and skin our knees so that we will finally get on our knees to listen and talk to Him. For most of us, it’s not until we reach a “broken” point in life that we will really listen to Him and finally do as He ask.

But no matter what Adam and Eve did, you still can walk with God and talk with Him in the cool of the garden as He had intended. And just like them, we probably will also do things He warns us against, but just like He did to Adam and Eve, He will to you… Yes He will still talk with you. He will know where you decided to go against His advice but yet He will still welcome you to His arms and continue to Love you and talk with you. And the more you fall in love with Him, the more easier it will be for you to discern what is His voice and what is the other voices. You will see the glory of your life during the times you were in fellowship with Him compared to the pains you may see when you withdrew. And before you start spouting off…. Yes you may experience pain when you are in fellowship with Him, but He will be right there with you, and will continue to talk with you no matter what you are going through. And yes, most importantly He wil tell you what to do to remove yourself from the pain. Which for the most part goes hand in hand with being in close communication with Him.

And let me point out…. that little five minute prayer before you go to bed at night… is NOT what He calls being in close communion with Him if thats your only conversation of the day with Him

If God is ever present with you, then why go most of the day without acknowledging His presence. And taking it a step further, if God is with you daily, why would you not introduce Him to your friends. Isnt it kind of rude to go around all day with God and not talk to Him or tell your friends about Him?

I think, or at least I hope what you are beginning to glean out of this, that if you want to hear God speak to you more often, then why not start by speaking to Him more often. He says He will open your eyes and open your ears, so give Him that chance to do so. But God likes sincerity in a relationship with Him. If you only run to Him when you scuff your knee and then leave Him in the back seat until it happens again, you wont be able to hear Him very well during the so called “good times” in life. The more you are around someone you love, the more you can picture them in your mind when they are away. So to keep that vison in our minds, we spend time with them, the same holds true with God. The more we talk with Him, the closer He will be in our lives and thus, we will be more “in tune” to hear what He desires to tell us

It’s not like God decides to draw closer to us, but hat we decide to draw closer to Him. He is in the same place all the time… right there waiting for us. And if you want to hear someone speak to you, then you know that the closer you are to them the better you will hear them. Do you want to hear God real good… then get closer to Him so you can.

Conversation is a two way street… One person doing al the talking is just a lecture, its not until both parties talk back and forth to each other that it becomes conversation…. So…. you want to hear from God? Start by looking at how much you talk to Him and how much you are at a place where you are willing, ready and receptive to hear Him. Kind of like, making Him part of your life and not a jeanie in a bottle you call on at your convienience.
